Dr. Manabe, one of the very first two winners of the 1992 Blue Planet Prize, is to be awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics

October 11, 2021
It has been announced that Dr. Syukuro Manabe, one of the very first two winners of the 1992 Blue Planet Prize, is to be awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences acknowledged that he led the development of physical models of the Earth's climate and was the first person to explore the interaction between radiation balance and the vertical transport of air masses.

In addition, the Academy acknowledged that his work laid the foundation for the development of current climate models.

Dr. Taro Matsuno, one of the 2013 Blue Planet Prize winners and a long-time acquaintance of Dr. Manabe, illustrated the achievements of Dr. Manabe as follows, in his interview released in July, 2020 in af Magazine.

"Dr. Manabe is a pioneer of research that treats global warming scientifically. Even at the early stage, based on valid experimental data and using definitive theoretical models, he made an accurate estimate of how much the temperature would rise in a region of the world if the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air kept increasing. Many researchers in this field around the world, including me, are doing research in conformity to his theory."

Achievements and lecture material of Dr. Manabe are available on our website: https://www.af-info.or.jp/en/blueplanet/list-1992.html
